Andersonville

Andersonville was a confederate military prison. It had the most men and held more man than it was supposed to. Andersonville only existed for 14 months but it really caused many deaths. Almost 13,000 out of more than 45,000 died from disease, poor sanitation, malnutrition, overcrowding,or other harmful things. This was because the camp did not provide basic needs. The water there was used for everything; the drank the water ,bathed in it and emptied their wastes into it. Henry Wirz was the prison’s commandant but since the soldiers did not like him they did do what he ordered. Some of the things he told them to do were things like feeding the prisoners and trying
to give them basic needs. But since they did not follow the prisoners became angry and the did not like Wirz either. He had no power over them. When the people found out how the people were treated there, Henry Wirz was tried and found guilty by a military tribunal. He was then hanged in Washington, D.C., on November 10, 1865. Henry Wirz was the only person executed for war crimes during the Civil War.

Battles of the Civil War

There were many important battles that led to the civil war but only some of them had a great impact. Some of those battles were Antietam, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Union Blockade of GA Coast, and Shermans Atlangta Campaign/March to Sea.Another important thing that led to the war was the Emancipation Proclimation. The Battle at Antietam was the single-day most bloodiest battle. There were 22,000 combined casualties and the generals were (confederates)Robert E. Lee and (union) George McLellan. This battle destroyed both sides. This battle led to The Battle of Gettysburg. The Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of America. This is because it destroyed the confederates and it was easier for the union to win. When the Union won they wanted to keep going so it led to the Battle od Chickamauga. But this was a bad choice because the union ended up loosing and the battle marked the end of the union offensive in Tenesse and Georgia. This was called the Chikamauga Campaign. In the end the union was weak and out of Georgia. This event began to lead up to Shermans Campaign and March to Sea. These two battles were led by General William T. Sherman. His main goal was to destroy Georgia.Sherman also wanted to help with the reelection of Abraham Lincoln. Before he did this he had the city evacuated so that he wouldnt have to take care of the people. When they arrived the began destroying railroads to stop transport. This was very risky because by destroying all methides of transport for supplies and communication he coludn't recieve any supplies or messages. When Sherman finished, GA was destroyed.

Election Of 1860,Secession in GA and Alexander Stephans's Role

Alexander Stepehens
Abraham Lincoln
The Election of 1860 was when Abraham Lincoln was elected for his first term. The republican party won the election. The Southern's reaction to this was secession. They wanted out! They became to be known as the cooperationalist. Alexander Stephens was a cooperationalist that played a very important part in passing the Compromise of 1850. He was elected vice president of the confederacy.  Secessionist were people who were against the union , but not everyone wanted to leave. The people that weren't very sure of what they wanted, were known as cooperationist. But in the end the delegates will be the ones to decide whether or not they want to leave and they chose secession.

Kansas-Nebraska Act and The Dred Scott Case

url.jpg

The Kansas- Nebraska act was an act that was passed to separate the land into territories.Kansas and Nebraska were these territories and they were used for new settlements. This act also repealed the Missouri compromise which angered the north because the Missouri compromise was keeping slavery out of their side. Without the compromise, slavery began to spread there and this caused more controversy. Another thing that caused controversy was the Dred Scott case. The Dred Scott v. Sanford was a case in which a slave (Dred Scott) claimed that since he had lived in a free state for a long time ,he was now free. This case was taken to the Supreme court and the justices ruled. They ruled in favor of Stanford and said that since slaves were not citizens of the United States they could not sue in Federal courts. They also said that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional and that Congress did not have the authority to prohibit slavery in the territories. In the end Dred Scott was a slave and would remain a slave.

Missouri Compromise ,Compromise of 1850 and GA Platform

The Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820 and it prohibited slavery in some territories. It was supposed to keep a balance between the free and slave states. Missouri entered as a slave state. The Compromise of 1850 was 5 bills that were passed to avoid a confrontation between the slave states and the free states. This was disrupted because California wanted in since they were populated because of the gold rush. This would ruin the slave and free state balance and something had to be done. The five major  things that were included in the compromise were that Texas present day borders were to in exchange for the U.S government debt. This land was then claimed into New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Nevada. Slavery was also abolished in Washington D.C. , California was admitted in as A free state and The Fugitive Slave Act was passed.
The Fugitive Slave Act required citizens to assist in the recovery of slaves , it denied jury trials and claim process was easier . More federal officers were also enforced to help.
