Reconstruction
Reconstruction Plans:
The reconstruction of America was a time of change. Abraham Lincoln planned for the reconstruction to strenghten the country. He planned for a quick retur to the Union and form a state government. But this would be as difficult as the war because there were still many things that the two people did not agree on.Johnson wanted to nullify ordinaces of secession. The congressional placed the states under the rule of the military and it ratified the 14th amedment. Also now that the blacks had rights , they were equal to the other man and they had rights. There were many challenges to come and obstacles to overcome but our people will be able to get through it.After the War
The Freedman's Bureau :
The Freedman's Bureau was an orginization formed by the Radical Republicans. Its goal was to help protect the rights of the freed blacks during the time of reconstruction. This orginaization led to the creation to many HBU's (historically black colleges) and the blacks were able to set up things of their own.New Amedments:
After the slaves were freed, three new amedments were created.13:Forbids Slavery
14:Allowed freed slaves citizenship and equal protection under the law
15:Gave ALL men the right to vote regardless of color or race
Sharecropping and Tenant Farming:
Sharecropping was when people farmed on land that was owned by someone else. Sharecroppers pay the owner back by giving them half of what they crop. Sharecroppers didn't own anything and had very little.Tenant farming was a bit better the sharecropping because tenant farmers owned things such as animals and tools. Tenant farmers also have an oppurtunity of saving money becaue they pay the owner of the land back with money at the end of the year or by giving them some of the crops.Andersonville
Andersonville was a confederate military prison. It had the most men and held more man than it was supposed to. Andersonville only existed for 14 months but it really caused many deaths. Almost 13,000 out of more than 45,000 died from disease, poor sanitation, malnutrition, overcrowding,or other harmful things. This was because the camp did not provide basic needs. The water there was used for everything; the drank the water ,bathed in it and emptied their wastes into it. Henry Wirz was the prison’s commandant but since the soldiers did not like him they did do what he ordered. Some of the things he told them to do were things like feeding the prisoners and trying
to give them basic needs. But since they did not follow the prisoners became angry and the did not like Wirz either. He had no power over them. When the people found out how the people were treated there, Henry Wirz was tried and found guilty by a military tribunal. He was then hanged in Washington, D.C., on November 10, 1865. Henry Wirz was the only person executed for war crimes during the Civil War.
